CTE Develops an Integrated Model
(An Emphasis on the Common Core)
The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers released the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English-language arts in June 2010. The criteria used in creating the Common Core State Standards are:
- They are aligned with expectations for college and career readiness.
- They are clear, understandable and consistent across all states.
- They include rigorous content.
- They build upon current state standards.
- They are realistic for effective use.
- They reflect standards of other top performing countries.
- They are research-based.
Our long-range curriculum and staff development plan at the Career and Tech Center will focus on aligning all CTE course curricula with the Common Core standards in math and ELA. Math and ELA are the two subjects upon which students build skill sets in all other subjects, including career and technical subjects. This alignment will be the foundation to achieving our goal of offering core academic credit through academic integration. Our effort in literacy will also move us toward our goal of increasing the likelihood of more students successfully completing NYS approved CTE programs and earn a high school diploma.
Below is a graphic representation of the work that will be done over the next two years in an effort to align the Common Core Standards in math and ELA with CTE programs at the Career and Tech Center. (Tecnniques, October 2011, Vol 86 / Number 7)
