Program Description

For students interested in the healthcare field, this class provides theory and practical hands-on experience for the care of individuals in hospitals, and long term care facilities. The year will includes class work and simulated laboratory practice. The student is introduced to multiple nursing care procedures, ethical and legal aspects of health care, basic knowledge of body structure and functions, fundamentals of health promotion, and common signs of health alteration and illness.

Problem solving skills and communication techniques are also introduced as applicable to the nursing assistant role in the health care setting. CNA class will also have class/lab work covering vital signs, CPR, and First Aid. Students also have a clinical component in area health care settings providing care and knowledge acquired in class.

The second year program allows students to become Certified Home Health/ Personal Care Aides. The student will also gain knowledge and hands on learning experiences of the home health care setting. Students will provide care within the home setting as well as within the hospital and doctor’s office settings.

Students will learn to assess a care plan of a client and provide the appropriate and safe care to that client. Students will also gain additional clinical hours within the hospital setting, and participate in various internships to explore the different types health care within the community.

This program prepares students for entry into the work force as a CNA, as well as providing a basis for exposure to other health-related disciplines.
